Frequently Asked Questions

If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, you’re welcome to email me at contact@drsamcockle.co.uk

Health Psychologists specialise in the psychology of health, wellbeing and illness. We’re interested in how people think, feel and act in relation to their health, and we use psychological evidence to support people in ways that are practical and meaningful.

My focus is on supporting people who have struggled with their weight, eating or activity. I look at the whole picture: how physical and mental health interact, and the environments, circumstances and challenges people are facing in their lives.

I don’t diagnose medical conditions or provide specialist mental health treatment. Instead, I work in the space between physical and mental health, helping people understand what’s going on and find approaches that feel calmer and more manageable in everyday life.

No. You don’t need a diagnosis, referral, or GP involvement. You’re welcome to book if eating or activity has been feeling difficult and you’d like psychology‑led support. If I ever feel that additional or different support would be appropriate, I'll discuss that with you.

My approach is weight-inclusive. This means that I can support you whether you want to lose weight or not. I don't offer services that promise rapid weight loss or specific weight results. Instead, we focus on helping eating or activity feel calmer and more manageable, which can create a more stable foundation for any changes you're aiming for.

I don’t make assumptions about your priorities; we focus on what matters to you.

If you're using weight loss medication, I can support you similarly too.

If you don't want this to be about weight at all, it won't be.

We talk about what’s been feeling difficult and what might be influencing that. From there, we explore practical, manageable approaches that support you in everyday life.

I draw on a range of evidence‑based approaches from health psychology and related fields, including the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and behaviour change science. This isn't therapy. It's structured, collaborative support informed by evidence‑based psychology and shaped by what you need.

Many people do feel this way. That's why a really important part of my role as a Health Psychologist is offering an understanding, non-judgemental place where we can explore your eating or activity at your pace, without adding shame or expectation.

Many people I work with have tried diets, plans, or other advice that didn't help, so I really understand why you'd ask this. One of the first things we discuss is your previous experiences; what hasn't worked, and whether anything has helped, even a little.

Psychology-led support focuses on taking the time to understand why things have been feeling difficult, so we can find approaches that are built around you, how you think, and what else is going on in your life.

If eating or activity has been feeling confusing, stressful, or stuck for a while, this kind of support can help you make sense of things and find calmer, more manageable approaches. You’re welcome to explore my About section or book a free consultation to discuss what you're looking for and see if I'm the right fit for you.

Yes, all sessions are online unless otherwise agreed. Online sessions can feel more comfortable and flexible, as you can talk from a familiar space and save travel time. It also means I can offer support wherever you are in the UK.

I support adults for whom eating or activity feel difficult or stressful, especially when things feel confusing or hard to change. This includes people who have behaviours that feel unhelpful but don't reach the level of an eating disorder diagnosis. If I ever feel that specialist eating disorder support would be more appropriate, I'll talk that through with you with sensitivity. If you're not sure, I encourage you to contact me or book a free initial consultation to discuss whether I'm the right fit for you.

That’s completely fine. Many people aren’t sure at first. You can book a free initial consultation and we’ll talk about what you’re looking for and what might fit best. There's no pressure to commit, we can take it one step at a time.
